Norfolk's Queen Elizabeth hospital has organised special "adapting to life in Norfolk" sessions for Portuguese staff whose otherwise excellent English results in too-literal translations of everyday expressions. Patients, particularly the elderly, face being met with incomprehension when complaining of "feeling under the weather", suffering "pin and needles" or experiencing problems with their "back passage".

Local expressions such as "blar", meaning to cry, and "mawther", meaning "young woman", are also likely to see mystified nurses flicking in vain through conventional phrasebooks. The distinct Norfolk brogue provides another linguistic obstacle for the recruits hired by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS trust. "One of the things people from overseas had difficulty with was our euphemisms such as 'spend a penny'," said a hospital spokesman. "In the past some of the new recruits from abroad, when patients used the expression, were taking people to the hospital shop."

"They all speak exceptional English, but that doesn't necessarily cover the type of English spoken in Norfolk. We have many different phrases and sayings in this part of the world. A lot of patients are elderly and use what can only be described as quaint phrases and descriptions, especially for body parts and common illnesses." The hospital has organised two-hour induction courses in dialect, idiom and colloquialism, covering phrases such as "spick and span", "higgledy-piggledy", "la-di-dah" and "tickled pink". Other useful terms on the agenda are "jim jams", "a cuppa" and "elbow grease". Nurses are being asked to write down any confusing phrases they hear on the wards so they can be discussed in follow-up meetings.

Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients' Association, said the training would ensure "safe service" in hospitals. "Anyone working for the NHS - nurse, doctor, other healthcare professional, healthcare assistant - must be able to be understood by the patient and must demonstrate that they are safe to treat patients," she said. But Fiona McEvoy, of the Taxpayers' Alliance, resorting to idiom herself, said it was "using a sledgehammer to crack a nut". It made more financial sense for foreign nurses to pick up local phrases "from hearing them used and being advised by peers", she said.

(Source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/aug/31/foreign-nurses-taught-english-euphemisms)

As pointed out in the article, good communication between NHS staff and patients is essential to uphold quality of service, but running regular language courses in these cases might be over the top and too costly.

There is real need for light-weight solutions that can be used in-situ and leverage peer learning to accelerate and scaffold the learning process. CloudBank could fill this gap and potentially save the NHS a lot of money!

Android fragmentation

In a recent blog post titled Android: write once, debug on every handset thats out there Hartmut Seichter complains about incompatibilities in the Android Camera API. As we found out last Monday when handing out our new T-Mobile Pulse phones to students taking part in the CloudBank evaluation, these issues are not limited to low-level APIs but even occur at the highest levels: the behaviour of Intents (re-usable software components in Android).

The CloudBank app uses a standard Android Intent to record audio. As this is part of the core Android API and behaves consistently on all HTC phones and SDK emulators across different Android versions, we did not even think of testing audio recording on our T-Mobile Pulse phones. Our students however jumped straight into it and found that there was no way to use a recording and go back to the CloudBank app.

Behaviour after recording: left Android standard, right T-Mobile Pulse

It turns out that either T-Mobile or Huawei, the manufacturer of the phone, have customised this Intent: Instead of showing "Use this recording" and "Discard" buttons after recording, the Pulse does not show any buttons at all but instead has options like "Share" and "Set as Ringtone" hidden in the menu. Congratulations T-Mobile/Huawei, you just have broken every app out there using the sound recorder intent on your phone!

On a technical level, the return values of the Intent were screwed up accordingly and it took us two whole days to find a work-around for Pulse phones that mimicked the standard behaviour and made sense to users! (Well, at least half of that was spent on getting the Pulse to work with the Android Debugger Bridge, but that's another story...)

Let the games begin

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 140px;border:0;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iXZHHNUhuXQ/TEAv83qWrwI/AAAAAAAAAGo/tkAzUziavwM/s400/bss.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494444268172259074" />Last Monday we got the phones out to students at the ISC taking part in the CloudBank evaluation. Our introduction, which was meant to introduce the CloudBank project and explain the mobile app, somehow fizzled out among the excitement about the new phones and students exploring the kit. However, we still managed to get the main points across and then delved into user support as students started straighaway to add new content to the Cloudbank repository. To do this we planned to implement 'user groups' which would allow the creation of distinct learning spaces, e.g. to allow a group of students to start with an empty word list and only see content contributed by group members.

On closer inspection however, user groups have a considerable admin overhead - and they are not the only way forward to achieve separate content pools. A light-weight alternative are tags or 'hashtags' or 'channel tags'. Tags have no admin overhead at all and in many ways seem a more elegant and flexible solution.

On August 23, 2007, the Twitter hashtag was born. Invented by Chris Messina, the first tweet with a hashtag read as follows: “how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in #barcamp [msg]?”

Source: The Short and Illustrious History of Twitter #Hashtags

Drawing up a list of real world problems / use cases and spelling out how these would be addressed with user groups or tags, we found that most problems could be addressed with both solutions (the main difference beeing the admin overhead for user groups). The only case not covered by tags is when groups want to keep their content private, however, this is balanced by the difficulties of usergroups to share their content with others. It all boils down to tag-based systems being by default open while user-groups are by default closed (even if you can easily join). Confronted with this almost philosophical questions we decided to implememnt a tag-based solution.

In order to cover all use cases, we need to be able to show all content, show only content from one or more subsets and exclude content from one or more subsets. Consequently the Settings dialog has these options:

Show only these tags: Only content tagged with these tags will be visible when browsing (e.g. group tag). Leave empty for all content.

Don't show these tags: Exclude certain tags when browsing (e.g. sex, religion). Leave empty to not exclude any tags.

Default tags for my posts: Add these tags by default (e.g. group tag). Leave empty for no default tags in your posts.

Here's a use case:
A teacher at the ISC wants his students to start from scratch with an empty word list. He thinks up the unique tag ISC2010 and instructs his students to call up the Cloudbank Settings dialog, where they enter the tag as an inclusion filter('Show only these tags: ISC2010'). In addition, students enter the same tag as their default post tag('Default tags for my posts: ISC2010'). As a result, all content posted by students is tagged with ISC2010 and they only see CloudBank content tagged with ISC2010.

New app, tools, blog

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 82px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_iXZHHNUhuXQ/TCxot0RRc_I/AAAAAAAAAFQ/Qoy3fJ3F3LM/s400/cbh.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488877182192284658" />
You may have noticed the new menu bar just below the blog title? It sums up the latest development spurt to get CloudBank ready for prime time - as a sustainable and widely-used mobile language learning tool.

We now support dynamic user groups, not through a boilerplate user-group implementation but through rather sophisticated tagging support that enables teachers to set up ad-hoc content pools and gives learners fine control over what they see.

We addressed the issue of spam, offensive and wrong content by enabling users to flag items for review by a cloudbank administrator or editor (e.g. a teacher using the system)

We added context-sensitive online help to the mobile application for novice users, as well as an about screen and a settings menu.

We created an admin panel which enables non-technical staff to edit, follow up flagged items and delete content from the database.

Last but not least we prepared our shiny new Android phones for action, by un-doing the useless t-mobile default configuration, setting up reasonable settings and homescreen and installing the new Cloudbank app. This may sound like childs play, but in fact I had blisters on my fingers after configuring 8 phones via touch screen!

I'll be explaining each of these points in more detail over the coming days. But now it's off to deliver the phones to the ISC so that we finally can get on with our evaluation...

Phones are here - woo hoo

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; border:0; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iXZHHNUhuXQ/TCMWinfUlkI/AAAAAAAAAE8/sKwokF0l63A/s400/8_phones_charging.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486253555039114818" />
It's been a long battle but here they are, neatly lined up and charging. While CloudBank was developed in first place to support informal learning, the discussion showed that there are many engaging ways how the app could be used in formal language courses, ranging from field trips and outdoor missions to competitions where students collect language- and culture-related material and then analyse and talk about it in whole-class, group- or one-on-one discussions.

An interesting aspect in these discussions was that CloudBank not only supports language learners, but also helps teachers to better understand their students' requirements as they can examine the collected material and deduct where their students have difficulties. We never thought of it this way around, but it is very interesting and once again confirms the value of involving stakeholders at all stages in the wider development process!

Apart from usage scenarios we also talked about practical issues and agreed a meeting with ESOL teachers at the ISC. Initially we also planned to meet the students to be involved in the evaluation but eventually dropped the idea as it might unnecessarily narrow down or restrict their use of CloudBank if confronted at the outset with our own ideas of how the system should be used.

In our meeting with ESOL teachers at the ISC, we first gave a short presentation of CloudBank and then discussed the planned evaluation with teachers, answered technical and conceptual questions and further explored potential scenarios how students could use the application. The teachers we talked to seemed very interested in CloudBank and were keen to get their hands on a mobile device to play around with it!

And this brings me straight to the sad story of trying to buy the mobile phones for our evaluation. I fear this whole post might turn into a particularly nasty rant if I go into the details, so let's just say it's not only the university, but also the phone companies who have mind-bending rules and regulations that hamper their operations and frustrate staff at either end. I better stop here.

Rolling on...

Yes, we're one of the few lucky Rapid Innovation projects to receive follow-up funding from JISC! We'll use the funds to carry out a pedagogical evaluation of CloudBank in co-operation with the International Student Centre (ISC) at the University of Sussex. This will strengthen any future bids to develop the system further and thereby address one of the most important aspects of sustainability: funding.

So what do we plan to do?

Based on preliminary talks with Tom Ottway, Head of English at the ISC, we'll use CloudBank in two consecutive language courses with international students. A big hurdle for any mobile learning project is the availability of mobile devices, and to this end we'll purchase a set of cheap Android devices and make them available to students together with with pre-paid internet access. The pedagogical evaluation will then be carried out in collaboration with ESOL teachers at the ISC.

Before we can start however, we need to ready the system for use in a production environment. Currently all user-generated content ends up in the same pool, however, in order to use the system in different contexts and with different user populations it is necessary to introduce the notion of user groups or content channels. This will allow the creation of distinct learning spaces with separate content pools for specific user groups. As a knock-on effect, we also need to update the web interface, technical and end-user documentation.

Finally, the evaluation will yield plenty of material to talk about, and we're planning to do this at the mLearn 2010 conference in Malta to maintain momentum and ensure continued international interest in CloudBank.

Final Progress Post

Title of Primary Project Output

CloudBank: Mobile Knowledge Sharing for Advanced Language Learners

Screenshots or diagram of prototype
--- click images to enlarge ---

Description of Prototype

20-second-pitch:

"Imagine you are an international student in the UK. Your English is quite good, but every now and then you hear a word or phrase that was missing in your vocabulary. Normally you would take a mental note ... and then forget about it. With CloudBank you can hack it into your mobile phone, add an image or audio recording, and share it instantly with other language learners."

CloudBank enables international students in the UK to collect, annotate and tag interesting or intriguing language- and culture-related content found in everyday life, including text, images, audio recordings and web links. These content items are saved to an online repository, from where they can be syndicated via RSS feeds for inclusion in almost any website, including blogs and profile pages. In addition to syndication, the repository offers a web interface for adding, editing and discussing content in an online community.

End User of Prototype

According to HESA there were more than 340.000 international students enrolled in UK HEI in 2007/2008. Although these students typically have a high level of competence in English language and may not feel the need to enrol on formal language courses, they are still concerned with improving their facility in the language and with the native culture. The goal of CloudBank is to provide an informal and engaging way for students in this situation to share and build their collective knowledge.

User scenario:

Khalil is Jordanian student in the Brighton. He is in the Student Union watching a football game with some English friends. A goal is scored and there is much hilarity over the goalkeeper being nutmegged. Khalil cannot make sense of this: there’s not much connection with the nutmegs of his experience, which are used in cooking. He asks his UK friends what it means to be nutmegged. They explain that it means the striker played the ball through the keeper's legs. Khalil thinks other non-native speakers may be interested in this new nugget of knowledge. He gets out his Android G1 phone, starts the CloudBank app and keys in “to nutmeg: in football: to play through an opponent's legs”, tagging the entry with “nutmeg” and “football”. For good measure he also records an English friend pronouncing the word, and adds the recording to the entry, before sending it to the CloudBank cloud.

This same evening, Keichi, a Japanese student, learns about the term to nutmeg through the CloudBank RSS feed on his profile page. By chance he’s just been watching a video clip of the goal from tonight’s match. He logs onto the CloudBank community portal, searches for the nutmeg entry, and adds a reference to the video clip, so that others can get a better understanding of what it means to be nutmegged.

Link to working prototype

http://itrg.brighton.ac.uk/cloudbank/download.php

Alternatively, scan the QR Code with yor Android phone:

Link to end user documentation

CloudBank Poster
http://itrg.brighton.ac.uk/cloudbank/files/CloudBank_poster.pdf

CloudBank Video
http://www.youtube.com/user/CloudBankChannel

CloudBank Presentation
http://www.slideshare.net/marcuswinter/cloudbank-research-seminar

CloudBank Mobile User Guide
http://itrg.brighton.ac.uk/cloudbank/files/CloudBank_Mobile_User_Guide.pdf

Link to code repository or API

CloudBank REST Server Public API
http://itrg.brighton.ac.uk/cloudbank/files/API_v0.1.pdf

CloudBank Android Client Code Repository
http://code.google.com/p/cloudbank/

Link to technical documentation

CloudBank REST Server Public API
http://itrg.brighton.ac.uk/cloudbank/files/API_v0.1.pdf

Cloudbank Android Client
http://code.google.com/p/cloudbank/wiki/Technical_Overview

Date prototype was launched

Prototype v.1 - 21 October 2009
Prototype v.2 - 17 December 2009

Project Team Names, Emails and Organisations

Lyn Pemberton, lp22 [at] brighton [dot] ac [dot] uk, University of Brighton, Project Leader

Marcus Winter, mw159 [at] brighton [dot] ac [dot] uk, University of Brighton, Design & As always when talking about the project, we had very positive feedback, offers for collaborations, and interesting new application ideas. It's a shame the project is nearly over with no follow-up funding agreed to develop it further. The project receives local, national and international attention, and a well-researched public version would be just a few months away.

CloudBank Research Seminar

Mobile Alert Alert

One of the planned distribution channels for CloudBank content was mobile alerts, which would be pushed out to users signing up to the service and could be used with any mobile phone. This looked feasible at the start of the project based on 3rd party services available at that time, but now it seems we cannot provide this service without additional development.

Just 6 months ago the hugely popular WidSets was up an running. The service allowed users to create and customise their own RSS alert widget. It minimised network traffic by providing server-side polling of RSS feeds, and notified subscribers when new content was posted. Oficially, WidSets has since been rolled into Nokia's OVI app store, however, WidSets or an equivalent application is not available there. Looks like it just has been killed off. Why?

Plusmo offers a similar service, but unfortunately SMS alert functionality is currently only available in the US. Their standard RSS reader, without alert functionality, had an Out-Of-Memory error on out test phones (Nokia SuperNova). Another alternative, Google SMS Channels, is currently only available in India.

Faced with these facts we have to adjust our project plans. We won't offer a mobile alert service in the current beta, but we'll develop our own mobile alert service for the release version. To protect the system from vandalism you need to apply for a developer key first, but beyond that everything is up to your imagination. The API enables anyone to develop CloudBank clients on any platform, be it mobile clients for the iPhone, Symbian and the like, desktop clients for Mac, PC and Linux, web-based clients, or even your fridge as long as it has an IP address and network connection. This was a very salubrious setting, with a very genial bowler hatted meeter and greeter chap. Very civilised.

The presentation session was civilised too: organised as two small round table talks, it gave the opportunity to discuss the project in some depth with 10 - 12 experts in very different aspects of mobile learning. Some interesting ideas - on implementation, the meaning negotiation process, recommendations and favourites, extensions to other languages amongst others. Thanks to all who joined in the discussion and to Mark van't Hooft who organised the research strand of the conference.

CloudBank on the phone

This week was all about getting CloudBank to run on actual phones. Pushing apps from the development environment onto the phone is a fairly straightforward process described in detail in the Android developer documentation.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 279px; height: 239px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_iXZHHNUhuXQ/SsYwb9y6O1I/AAAAAAAAACQ/qzqc37ELIh4/s400/cb_on_phone_1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388047261198072658" />

Almost inevitably hitherto unnoticed bugs will appear once an app runs on a real device. Among the many possible causes for unexpected behaviour is forgetting to change localhost references to the real server on the web! To automatically deal with this one needs to find out if running on a device or emulator, which seems essential in many ways but strangely is nowhere documented.

import android.os.Build;

public static final boolean isEmulator(){
return Build.MODEL.equals("sdk");
}

The android.os.Build class holds all kinds of information about the platform we're running on. I picked the MODEL field, which gives me "sdk" on the emulator and "HTC Magic" on the phone, but you might replace that with whatever you see fit.

CloudBank in Florida

<img style="display:block; margin:0; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 380px; height: 179px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iXZHHNUhuXQ/SrubpMK2Z4I/AAAAAAAAACA/p38oYH994b8/s400/orlando.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385068911395235714" />

Yes, we've had a paper on CloudBank accepted for the prestigious mLearn 2009 conference in Orlando. This will be a good chance to get a wider perspective than we usually find at academic conferences. As our server speaks XML, we need to parse XML on the Android client. However, a quick look at the documentation reveals that Android has no less than three different XML parsers: the traditional DOM and SAX parsers plus the recently added XML Pull Parser, which promises to deliver high performance at a small memory footprint.

Great, this is exactly what we want: higher performance with less memory!

But does the promise hold up? Too lazy to set up my own performance test and confident that others have done that already, I dug up a recent article on Android XML parsing by Shane Conder. It describes a performance test for all three parsers with different data volumes, which surprisingly found the SAX parser to perform best on all three data sets.

Users, systems and their models

We're still digesting the feedback from our second user meeting, this time with our larger focus group consisting of eleven pre-sessional English students, from a range of countries including China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Russia. Because of the large number of participants, this was run as a general focus group to gather opinions on the proposed system and its functions, rather than as a practical design session. And very interesting it was too.

Like the participants in the co-design session, the students were clearly used to using their mobile phones to retrieve information and were much more comfortable seeing CloudBank as a kind of hand-made dictionary for them to consult, rather than as a resource to contribute to. This led to an emphasis in the discussion on trust, authority and the quality of the information in the CloudBank repository.

This gives us some food for thought. Do we place more emphasis on the quality of the language data, maybe with trusted authors, even teachers, involved, turning the system into a resource to be consulted individually rather than contributed to? This would be risky, because it's not hard to predict that our database of words won't be as full or reliable as a plain old online dictionary, the obvious model.

Or do we follow the original concept of a self regulating collaborative community of language learners contributing what seems of use or interest to their peers, with no teacher involvement? Or some hybrid? If we stick with our original concept, it's clear we have a lot of thinking to do about the model of the system that we project to the potential users (through interface design, brand name, termininology, publicity material), to avoid misconceptions and disappointment.

Hmmmmm.

Co-design session 1

Time is flying! End of last week we had our first co-design session with users, and I didn't even find time to blog about it. So here's a brief summary. The meeting took place on 30th of July for 2½ hours. As one would expect for this time of year, only 3 of the 6 invited 'super-users' were available. The schedule included:

15 minute questionnaire to establish participants' background and views

15 minute introduction to CloudBank (included below)

5 minute questions & answers

15 minute viewing a very English film (A Private Function)

50 minute discussion: what was difficult to understand, why, similar situations in other contexts, measures to improve, etc.

50 minute co-design: feedback and ideas based on initial interaction designs

The whole meeting was video-taped (with participants' consent) and two researchers took notes during the session.

And what did we learn? A lot! The session brought up many aspects we did not think of before. It helped to further develop our initial interaction designs and in the process led to a more rounded, complete service: Whereas we initially thought of the CloudBank Android client as an application to collect, annotate and tag language related content, with distribution handled through RSS feeds and mobile alerts, our users placed equal emphasis on querying and editing the data on their handsets. Yippee, this makes it a much more useful service! Ouch, we just added several layers of complexity!

Many other ideas were thrown in, ranging from the extremely useful and powerful, like filtering based on social networking concepts, to the more adventurous, like voice recognition and synthesis. Sadly though we only can note them down at this point as the project must end in November. However, the most promising ideas might well inform a follow-up project :-)

Balsamiq trial experience

Taking a break from coding Android sandbox experiments, this afternoon I tried out the UI prototyping tool Balsamiq to develop some initial ideas for the CloudBank client user interface. Usually I use pen and paper for this kind of task: low-tech tools that are difficult to beat in terms of flexibility and speed. If only there was copy/paste and undo/redo in the analog world...

Balsamiq runs online in a browser window or on the desktop, with free trials for both versions. I tried the online version, which is fully functional but displays a nag screen every few minutes. (Just hit dismiss to continue).

Having watched their video tutorial, I knew roughly how the software works and had no problems finding my way around. This is a very focussed UI design tool. No feature creep. It's amazing how quick you get acceptable results, I put together three mobile screens for CloudBank in less than two hours. This includes time to experiment, annotate and export the screens.

The trial version allows you to export and import designs. Export either as XML to the clipboard, or as a PNG image to download, import as XML. One thing to keep in mind is that imports are cumulative, i.e. to restore a previously saved design it is advisable to clear the current mockup before import.

Some difficulties I had:

Could not change the background color of controls or the provided iPhone screen

Could not create a simple multi-line button. There is a multi-line button provided, but that is pre-configured with fixed fonts for the first (large) and second line (small).

In some cases I found the grid-based positioning of controls too coarse; an option to turn it off would be useful.

Cannot import custom graphics. I know this is difficult to implement for web-based tools as they have no direct access to the client computer's hard disk, however, unfortunately the desktop version has the same limitation.

Despite some problems I think this is a wonderful tool for UI prototyping: focused, very speedy, and with a useful arsenal of controls and icons. While in my experience pen and paper are still quicker when sketching initial designs, Balsamiq definitely is a strong competitor. And in addition to speedy sketching, it supports copy/paste, undo/redo and sharing of designs! We don't want anyone to use the code for closed-source commercial purposes, or at least not without asking us. Which license to choose?

The initial plan was to use the Free Software Foundation's General Public License (GPLv2) which is a 'copyleft' license requiring any code using our code to be released under the same licence terms, effectively preventing closed-source commercial use of our code. However, what about compatibility between other open source licenses? E.g. we want to use the HTTP Commons client, which is released under the Apache 2.0 (ASLv2) license. Are there any problems?

Ed Burnette gives a fairly useful overview of open source licenses, but this is not enough to make a decision. With respect to our specific circumstances, this ars technica article explaining why Google chose the ASLv2 over GPLv2 for Android is much more helpful:

a) Although the underlying Linux kernel is licensed under GPLv2, much of the user-space software infrastructure that will make up the Open Handset Alliance's platform will be distributed under the ASLv2. Code that is distributed under the ASL can be integrated into closed-source proprietary products and redistributed under a broad variety of other terms.

b) By contrast, 'copyleft' licenses (such as the GPL) generally impose restrictions on redistribution of code in order to ensure that modifications and derivatives are kept open and distributed under similar terms.

c) It is important to note that the ASL is only being applied to the assortment of user-space platform components that make up Android. The kernel itself is still licensed under the GPLv2, and third-party software that runs on top of the platform can be distributed under pretty much any license, including commercial and copyleft licenses. It is also important to note that, although the ASL was not compatible with previous versions of the GPL, it is entirely compatible with the GPLv3. This means that code distributed under the ASL can be incorporated into GPLv3 software.

It looks like choosing the GPLv3 for CloudBank means we can use other GPLv3 and ASLv2 code while our own code would remain strictly open source, i.e. without commercial exploitation in closed-source software products.

Welcome

Hurrah, our grant application has been accepted by JISC, and we finally can get to work on the CloudBank project!

Here's a brief description of the project:

The CloudBank project aims to build a lightweight mobile- and web-based crowd-sourced information system to help international students to pool and negotiate their knowledge and understanding of the local language and culture. The system allows students to collect, annotate and tag interesting or intriguing language- and culture-related content found in everyday life, including text, images and other media, and to upload these content items to a repository. From the repository, the information can be syndicated, e.g. via RSS feeds or as alerts. In addition, the repository offers a web interface to allow adding, editing, annotating, tagging and discussion of content items. In time we hope this can develop into a a central point around which a community of practice can crystallise.

Stay tuned - subscribe to our RSS feed!
